Fords fall to Ursinus

Fords fall to Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team came up just short to host Ursinus College on Thursday afternoon in Game 1 of a Centennial Conference doubleheader as the Fords lost a tight 1-0 contest. Haverford fell 9-2 in Game 2.

The first game of the twinbill was a pitchers' duel as the Fords (15-14-1, 2-10 CC) had a tough time solving Ursinus (16-13, 5-5) pitcher Jennilyn Weber, and the Bears had an equally tough time with Haverford starter Claire Fitzgerald.

Weber (9-7) limited the Fords to two hits while striking out 10. Equally effective was Fitzgerald (8-5) who allowed just four hits and no walks while striking out six.

Ursinus scored one unearned run in the second inning and that was enough due to Weber's impressive performance in the circle.

Elizabeth Newman and Gabrielle Sapienza tallied the Haverford hits in Game 1.

The Fords came alive at the start of Game 2 as Laura Iwanyk's first home run of the season provided Haverford with an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Bears responded with three runs in the third and five in the fourth to move ahead, 8-1.

Laina Gagliardi worked a lead-off walk in the fifth and then later came around to score to account for the Fords' final run of the afternoon.

Iwanyk finished with two of Haverford's six hits in Game 2. Brittany Stevenson (5-9) took the loss.

The Fords welcome rival Swarthmore College to Class of '95 Field on Saturday. The Centennial doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
