Fords split with Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team earned a split of a non-conference doubleheader against host Arcadia University on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 victory in Game 2. The Knights registered a 9-3 victory in Game 1.

The Fords (16-17-1) scored first in the second game of the day as Jill Schnall worked a lead-off work in the third inning and then later came around to score. Arcadia (17-21) quickly answered back with one run on two hits in the bottom of the frame before Haverford took the lead for good in the fourth.

Erin Delaney's double down the left field line plated Jordan Nieusma to start the three-run fourth. Delaney and Schnall also came home before the inning was through to extend the Fords lead to 4-1.

Haverford added a final run in the sixth as Elizabeth Newman reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on two-straight singles by Lauren Touey and Jen DiCandilo. Dayle Comerford tallied her 26th RBI of the season  when she brought Newman home with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Holding the Knights to one run on six hits, Brittany Stevenson (6-9) went the distance for the win.

Touey finished with two hits in Game 2 while Jill Schnall patiently worked three walks that led to two runs.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning of Game 1, the Fords rallied to take the lead in the third. Newman led off the frame with a walk and came around to score two batters later courtesy of  DiCandilo's fifth home run of the season.

Haverford tacked on one more run in the fourth as Schnall came home to extend the Fords' lead to 3-1.

Arcadia closed out the scoring with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to claim the victory in the opening contest.

Claire Fitzgerald (8-8) struck out four in the loss.

Laura Iwanyk registered two of Haverford's seven hits in Game 1.

The Fords close out the season with a Centennial Conference doubleheader against visiting Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon at Class of '95 Field. Start time is 1 p.m.
