Fords sweep Dickinson

Fords sweep Dickinson

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team limited Dickinson College to just five hits on the day as the Fords swept the Red Devils in a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Class of '95 Field on Saturday afternoon. Haverford edged Dickinson, 2-0, in Game 1 before closing out the sweep with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

The opening game of the day saw the two squads trade zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning when the middle of the order stepped up to the plate for the Fords (13-5, 3-1 CC). Jen DiCandilo led off with a single and Dayle Comerford followed with a single of her own. Lauren Touey drove home DiCandilo with another Haverford single and Julie Garlick capped the scoring with an RBI-single to left field that plated Comerford.

Needing just three more outs, Sara Tauriello sent the Red Devils (8-10, 1-3) down in order for the fifth time in seven innings of work. Tauriello (5-0) struck out six and allowed just two hits to remain undefeated on the season.

Elizabeth Newman registered two of the Fords' six hits in the opener.

Looking for the sweep, Haverford jumped all over Dickinson's Chelsea Homa (4-5) in the first inning with three runs on four hits. Newman led off with a double to left field and Sarah Brody nailed a single up the middle. Lauren Touey's sacrifice fly scored Newman and Comerford's seventh double of the season brought Brody home. Kristin Tatum, the reigning conference player of the week, delivered the final damage in the inning with a single up the middle to score Comerford.

The Red Devils rallied for three runs in the third on three hits to tie the contest but the Fords were not finished yet. Comerford's second double of the game got things started in the fourth and Tatum made sure to not leave her stranded as her RBI-single drove home the go-ahead run. Tatum later scored to give Haverford a two-run cushion and Winesett and Fitzgerald took care of the rest as they held Dickinson without a hit over the final five innings.

Winesett (6-3) struck out four in five innings to earn the win while Fitzgerald picked up her first save of the season. Fitzgerald induced five ground outs and struck out one in a solid performance over the final two innings to close out the victory.

The Fords continue Centennial Conference play on Tuesday when Muhlenberg College comes to Class of '95 Field for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
