DiCandilo named to academic all-area squad

PHILADELPHIA - Haverford College's Jen DiCandilo earned a spot on the Philadelphia Inquirer 2013 Academic All-Area Softball Team as released Wednesday by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).

In order to be eligible for academic all-area, an athlete must be in at least her second year at the institution and own a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

DiCandilo was a model of consistency at the plate and in the field for the Fords in 2013 as Haverford advanced to the Centennial championship game and tied the program record for wins in a season (26).

The junior registered new career-high marks in batting average (.392), runs (32), hits (51) and doubles (15) while extending her streak of consecutive starts to 109. A dependable threat in the middle of the order, DiCandilo hit safely in 29 of the Fords' 39 contests and struck out a mere 15 times in 130 at bats. The 2013 first-team all-conference selection was equally impressive in the field where she accounted for a highlight reel of diving stops over the course of the campaign.

DiCandilo finished in a tie for second in the Centennial in runs batted in (34) while also ranking among the conference leaders in doubles (second), slugging percentage (fourth) and runs (seventh). Entering the final year of her career, DiCandilo stands second all-time in program history in doubles (35) and home runs (11).

Majoring in economics, DiCandilo earned inclusion to the conference's spring academic honor roll for the second straight year.

Ten student-athletes compose the academic all-area squad led by performer of the year Dana Parks from St. Joseph's University.
