Softball opens home slate with sweep of Arcadia

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team opened its 2014 home slate with a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader against Arcadia University on Thursday at Class of '95 Field. The Fords registered a 10-2 six-inning victory in Game 1 before completing the undefeated afternoon with a 14-1 five-inning win in the nightcap.

Extending their winning streak to six games, the Fords (9-1) greeted Arcadia's starting pitcher Erin Wilson (1-4) with three hits and one run in the bottom of the first. A single to right field by Dayle Comerford brought Elizabeth Newman home to give Haverford the early lead.

The Knights (2-8) went ahead in the top of the fourth with two runs but the visitors would not stay out in front for long as the Fords responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Jill Schnall's double to center plated Kristin Tatum and Julie Garlick's single up the middle scored Schnall and Newman.

Haverford exploded for six more runs in the sixth on five singles and a double by Tatum to chase Wilson and close out the convincing 10-2 victory.

Newman paced the Fords' offense with three hits while Comerford, Schnall and Stephanie Wolfson added two apiece.

Striking out eight and allowing just three hits, sophomore Emily Winesett (3-0) went the distance for her 12th career win.

After registering a total of 12 hits in the opener, the Fords combined for 13 more hits in the final game of the day.

Newman was once again a catalyst in the leadoff position as the senior drove in four runs during a 4-for-4 performance at the plate.

Moving out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, Haverford diminished any thoughts of an Arcadia rally with 11 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the fourth. Garlick (pictured) delivered the big blow in the frame with her first career home run.

Sophomore Sara Tauriello (2-0) earned the win in the circle for the Fords by striking out nine and limiting the Knights to just one hit over four innings. Coming in to pitch the fifth, freshman Kendall Chambers struck out two.

Haverford's non-conference schedule continues on Saturday when the Fords welcome Penn State-Berks to Class of '95 Field for a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m. The Nittany Lions won a school-record 36 games last season on the way to their first trip to the NCAA tournament in school history.
