Fords split with McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Haverford College softball team earned a split of a Centennial Conference doubleheader against host McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon. The Fords outlasted the Green Terror, 3-1, in 10 innings in the second game of the day after McDaniel escaped with a 3-2 nine-inning win in Game 1.

Playing into extra innings for the second time in the day, the Fords (19-9, 8-4 CC) and Green Terror (21-11, 10-4) entered the 10th inning of the scoreless contest with a runner on second base due to the tiebreaker rule.

Haverford took full advantage of the baserunner in scoring position with no outs as the Fords plated three runs. Kendall Chambers scored the game's first on an error by McDaniel pitcher Caroline Brehm (19-8) after Lauren Touey had successfully sacrificed Chambers to third. Junior Julie Garlick then added some insurance runs with a two-run single to left field that plated Elizabeth Newman and Jill Schnall.

The Green Terror responded with one run in the bottom of the 10th but the hosts would get no closer as the Fords hung on for the 3-1 victory.

Emily Winesett (8-2) outshined Brehm, the conference leader in wins and strikeouts, as she scattered six hits and struck out 14 over 10 innings. Winesett's strikeout total was just one away from the program record of 15 and the sophomore threw 100 strikes out of 142 total pitches.

Brehm finished with 12 strikeouts in the loss.

Jill Schnall, one of the top hitters in the Centennial, finished with two of Haverford's four hits in the contest.

The opening game of the day saw McDaniel jump out to a 1-0 lead after one inning but the Fords answered back with two runs in the fourth with the help of an RBI-double from junior Dayle Comerford.

The Green Terror tied the contest at 2-2 in the sixth and the score did not change again until the ninth inning when Jaclyn Liebowitz's hit was just out of reach of Schnall at second base. Liebowitz's double off of relief pitcher Chambers (2-3) scored Stephanie Maring for the winning run.

Sara Tauriello limited McDaniel to just four hits while striking out eight over the initial seven innings of Game 1.

Brehm registered the win for the Green Terror with an 11-strikeout performance.

Haverford finishes its non-conference slate on Monday with a game against Eastern University beginning at 4:30 p.m.
