Softball clinches #2 seed with sweep of Bullets

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team extended its winning streak to six games with a sweep of a Centennial Conference doubleheader against host Gettysburg College on Sunday afternoon. The Fords edged the Bullets, 5-4, in Game 1 before taking down Gettysburg, 8-5, in the nightcap. Haverford's two wins on the day allowed the Fords to clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

The Fords (24-9, 12-4 CC) pulled off their eighth comeback win of the season in the opener after the Bullets had scored the initial two runs of the game in the second inning. Haverford answered right back with four runs in the top of the third on three hits. Senior Elizabeth Newman got things started with a leadoff single and she later came around to score on another single by Jen DiCandilo. Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded, sophomore Kristin Tatum made the most of the opportunity as she laced a two-run triple to right center. Tatum later capped the inning with a successful steal of home.

Junior Julie Garlick extended the Fords' lead to 5-2 with an RBI-single in the sixth that plated Newman. The run proved to be the difference in the contest as Gettysburg (19-15, 5-11) scored two unearned runs in the seventh before freshman pitcher Kendall Chambers earned the first save of her career by closing out the contest for starter Emily Winesett (10-2). Winesett continued to shine as she struck out three and allowed no earned runs in six innings of work. The sophomore has allowed just one earned run in her last five appearances (34 innings).

Newman finished 2-for-2 in the opener while Brittany Stevenson went 2-for-3 as Haverford tallied eight hits overall off of Gettysburg starter Michelle Fox (9-8).

The Fords moved out to an early lead in the nightcap after they batted around in the second inning on the way to scoring four runs and chasing starter Lindsey Treanor (10-7). Haverford continued to pour it on with two more runs in the third that caused the Bullets to make another pitching change.

The visitors came close to ending the game early with a two-run fifth that made the score 8-0 but Gettysburg, playing in its final game of the season, did not go away quietly with five runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Sara Tauriello (8-1) prevented further damage, however, when she struck out Emily Hall to end the rally.

Chambers finished off the Bullets in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning to earn her second save of the day.

Newman, who went 5-for-5 over the course of the doubleheader, had three of the the Fords' eight hits in Game 2.

Haverford begins play in the conference tournament, hosted by Muhlenberg College, on Saturday at 10 a.m. against third-seeded McDaniel College. Haverford and Muhlenberg finished with the same conference record but the Mules owned the tiebreaker and will consequently host the conference tournament for the second straight year.
