Softball Wipes Away Widener, 9-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team won the only completed game Tuesday afternoon against Widener University in run-rule fashion. The Fords (14-5) scored two or more runs in the second through fifth innings to claim a 9-1 win over Widener (14-3) to start the day. Game two was called in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain with the teams tied 0-0 before the game could reach a point of conclusion.

The Pride started game one by manufacturing a run with a bunt single, stolen base and two-out hit. However, that would be the last run the guests scored on the afternoon. Haverford started the second inning with a single from Jill Schnall and double from Stephanie Wolfson to put a pair of runners on base. Julie Garlick drove both of those runs in with the second straight double of the inning to make it 2-1.

After setting the Pride side down in order in the third, the Fords scored three times in their half of the inning. Lauren Touey started the inning with a walk and stole second before an RBI single from Comerford brought the first run around. A double off the bat of Kristin Tatum put a pair of runners in scoring position before an RBI groundout from Schnall and a passed ball made the score 5-1.

Haverford kept the pressure on in the fourth when Jessica Koshinski worked a walk before a single from Touey. Both of those table setters came around to score when Tatum lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. A throwing error allowed a second run to score on the play.

A double play in the top of the fifth erased Widener's chance of doing damage in its half of the inning. Singles from Sarah Brody and Garlick set up Koshinski for a double into the right centerfield gap that plated the game's final two runs and put the mercy rule into effect.

Eight different players recorded a hit for Haverford in the game. Each of those eight players also scored at least one run with Touey scoring a second run. Garlick finished the game with a team-high three RBI. Sara Tauriello picked up the complete game win in the circle with her five innings of work. She scattered four hits and struck out four as she improved to 5-1 overall on the season.

Softball will be back at home Thursday to wrap up its homestand with a key Centennial Conference doubleheader against McDaniel. Those two games are scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. on the Class of '95 Field.
