Softball Just Misses Upset of No. 21 Moravian, 5-4

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Haverford College softball team nearly upset No. 21 Moravian for its first victory of the 2016 season on Monday afternoon. However, a four-run top of the seventh to tie the game against the Greyhounds was wiped away with a Moravian walk-off victory in the bottom half of the frame. The Fords dropped their second game of day by a 5-1 margin against Millsaps.

The nationally-ranked Greyhounds used a pair of extra base hits in the first inning to jump in front 2-0. A leadoff triple and hit by pitch scored in the top of the first on a passed ball and subsequent double into the right centerfield gap for the game's first offense. Haverford game one starter Emily Winesett came right back and retired 14 of the next 15 batters she faced after a third hit in the top of the first put runners on the corners with one out. Moravian did not put another runner in scoring position until the sixth inning.

Extra-base hits spelled two more runs for Moravian in the bottom of the sixth. Three doubles in the sixth led to two more runs as the Greyhounds led 4-0 as Haverford headed into its final at-bats. With their backs against the wall, the Fords came out swinging in the seventh with two-out magic.

Alex Craig singled to start the top of the seventh. However, the next two batters were retired to leave no room for error. The big blow in the inning came when Kendall Chambers delivered a three-run home run after Kristin Tatum had been hit by pitch during the previous at-bat. Two errors by the Greyhounds kept Haverford's hopes alive. Jessica Koshinski then kept the game alive as she singled home the game-tying run before a strikeout ended the two-out rally with runners on the corners.

Nevertheless, the comeback was ultimately thwarted in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff single, bunt and error loaded the bases with one out. The Fords cut down potential game-winning down on a force play to put two away but a single back through the middle gave Moravian the 5-4 victory.

In the second game, Millsaps jumped out in front early with three runs in the top of the first and another run in the second before an eventual 5-1 victory.

Softball will return to the playing field for another doubleheader on Tuesday. The Fords will take on Meredith at 1 p.m. and later battle No. 10 Alfred at 5 p.m.
