Softball Walks Off Drew to Seal Sweep on Senior Day

HAVERFORD, Pa. – After a weather delay pushed Senior Day back by 24 hours, the Haverford College softball team made the wait more than worthwhile. The Fords (15-13) swept visiting Drew (12-16) on Sunday, taking the opener 6-3 before Kamaha'o Bode capped the day with a dramatic walk-off home run to clinch a 4-3 win in the late game. Before the first pitch of game one, Haverford honored its senior class of Maddie Etheridge, Mia Kessinger, Rachel McQueen, and Abby Olivier with a pregame ceremony recognizing their contributions to the program.

Game 1: Haverford 6, Drew 3

In game one, Drew opened the scoring in the top of the first as Olivia Magliacano singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Josie Di Troia's RBI single. Haverford quickly answered in the bottom half. Addie Sapirstein singled to lead off, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an error as Drew attempted to throw out Jocelyn Leal stealing.

Kessinger delivered a highlight on her Senior Day, launching a solo home run in the second to give Haverford the lead. The Fords added two more in the third. Olivier and Sapirstein reached on consecutive bunt singles, and after a sacrifice from Etheridge, Bode stepped up with a two-out double to center to plate both runners, extending the lead to 4-1.

Drew cut the deficit in the fourth as Aurora Marino doubled and scored on a Teagan Bradley single. Magliacano followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3. But Haverford responded again in the fifth, as Kyra van Denburgh and Kessinger drove in runs to push the lead to 6-3.

Clarissa Smith came on in relief and was effective over 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk to secure the win. Sapirstein and Kessinger each collected two hits, with Kessinger notching two RBIs and Sapirstein scoring twice.

Game 2: Haverford 4, Drew 3

In game two, Drew again struck first with a run in the top of the first. Mackenzie Pasani drove in the opening run, but Haverford starter Lauren Lamme escaped a bases-loaded jam to prevent further damage.

Sapirstein doubled in the first but was stranded. In the third, she doubled again and moved to third on a single by Etheridge. Sapirstein then scored on a double-steal attempt to tie the game 1-1.

The game remained deadlocked until the sixth, when Magliacano's RBI single gave Drew a brief 2-1 lead. But the Fords rallied in the bottom half. Van Denburgh and Lauren Martin singled, and Abby Litchfield walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Kyle Morano drew a walk to bring in the tying run, and Sapirstein followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 3-2.

Drew tied the game once more in the seventh with an RBI groundout, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. Leading off the bottom of the seventh, Bode crushed a towering home run to left field for her eighth of the season, delivering the walk-off win. It marked her second walk-off homer of the year; she previously ended the game against Rosemont on March 18 with a long ball that triggered the run rule.

Lamme worked 5.1 innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out four. Bodak finished the game with 1.2 efficient innings, allowing one hit and one run.

Sapirstein had three hits from the top of the order, including two doubles. Van Denburgh and Martin added two hits apiece as the Fords completed the sweep.

Haverford returns to action Tuesday, April 15, hosting rival Swarthmore in a key Hood Trophy doubleheader. First pitches are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
