CLERMONT, Fla. - The Haverford College softball team pounded out 13 hits during a 12-0 win against Monmouth (Ill.) on Sunday to open the 2020 season with a split. Emily Reinstadtler threw her first complete game shutout in the victory which followed a 5-1 defeat at the hands of No. 20 Carthage in Florida.
Opening up the season against No. 20 Carthage, the Fords went toe-to-toe with a Lady Reds team that came within one game of the Women's College World Series a season ago. A five-run fourth inning proved to be all Carthage needed in the win as the Haverford pitching staff allowed no runs and just three hits over the other six innings.
Temma Levis got the start for the Fords in the circle and scattered just three hits over her first three innings of work while striking out seven during her first start of the year. Even in the fourth, Haverford got two outs after a Carthage leadoff single and walk to start the fourth. However, three straight hits brought home those five runs and the Fords were unable to catch up over their final four times at the plate as all of Carthage's runs came in that single inning.
Both teams finished the contest with seven hits. Haverford strung together three of those hits in its last time up to bat Johanna Batterton started the inning with a one-double while a pinch-hit single from Madison Hujber put runners on the corners. Ashley Sisto broke the shutout with a two-out single back through the middle but the game ended with a runner thrown out on the base paths. Abby Marquis paced Haverford's offense in the first game with a 2-for-3 collegiate debut from the clean up spot.
Haverford bounced back with Reinstadtler's shutout to give the Fords a 12-0 win against Monmouth (Ill.). Reinstadtler allowed just three hits (all singles) while walking two and striking out five over her six innings of work. Haverford's offense more than helped her cause as four Fords hat multi-hit games, highlighted by Sisto's 3-for-4 game with two runs scored and two more driven in. Nicole Swisher also scored and drive in two runs as she joined Emma Souter and Marquis with multi-hit contests.
The Fords scored in five of their six innings up to bat as they were only shutdown during the second inning. After two runs in the first, third, and fourth innings, Haverford added one more in the fifth before putting the run-rule into effect with a huge sixth inning.
A single from Marquis was followed by Marybeth Stone reaching on an error while a walk to Michelle Kaplan loaded the bases. Helping her own cause, Reinstadtler drove in two runs from the batter's box while Maya Casey and Sisto later added RBI knocks to eventually put the final score at 12-0.
Softball will return to action on Monday at the Minneola Athletic Complex with games against Case Western Reserve (11:15 a.m.) and Husson (1:30 p.m.).
