Softball Falls in Doubleheader at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team (13-19, 8-6 CC) dropped both games of a Centennial Conference doubleheader with rival Swarthmore (24-4, 13-1 CC) on Tuesday, losing a 9-1 decision in five innings before falling again by an 8-0 final in five innings in game two.

It was a day to forget for Haverford as Swarthmore shut down the Fords across both games. Haverford got on the board first in a wild sequence of events during the second inning. First, Mia Kessinger singled up the middle for Haverford's first hit of the game. Nikki Kingsland then reached first base on an error, and Kessinger advanced to second.

Phoebe May advanced the runners with a bunt, leaving Tessa Pearlstein with runners in scoring position. Kingsland advanced to third in Pearlstein's at-bat, and Kessinger ran home to score but couldn't beat the tag. Finally, Pearlstein was tagged out while running from second to third but not before the wild pitch scored Kingsland.

Swarthmore took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the inning and finished their dominant play with five runs in the fifth inning, bringing the game to an early end. Haverford left two runners on base for the game. Maya Casey pitched four innings and struck out two batters.

In game two, Haverford was again reduced to one hit from Carley Parsons in the fourth inning. The Garnet scored five runs in the opening inning, and the Fords couldn't recover against the strong pitching from Meg Ozawa. Eventually, three more runs from Swarthmore in the second and third inning were enough to end the game in five innings.

Haverford will look to bounce back as the Fords have eyes on a playoff berth, sitting in a tie for third in the Centennial Conference. The Fords will take on Gettysburg in an away doubleheader on Saturday, April 30. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two to follow at 3 p.m.
