ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team (16-18, 4-10 CC) split a Centennial Conference doubleheader against Muhlenberg (20-16, 8-6 CC) on Tuesday afternoon at Cedarcreek Field, as the softball field on the Muhlenberg College campus remains under construction.
Game 2: Muhlenberg 7, Haverford 0
Muhlenberg got on the board early, as Gillian Zack doubled in the bottom of the first and later scored on a wild pitch. The Mules added two more runs in the second following a fielding error with the bases loaded, giving them a 3-0 lead.
Pitchers Rachel McQueen and Morgan Bobrowski traded scoreless third and fourth innings before the Mules broke the game open in the fifth. A bases-loaded, one-out double by Skyla Campisi drove in three runs, part of a four-run frame that extended the lead to 7-0.
Haverford was unable to mount a comeback, as Bobrowski finished off a complete game shutout. The Fords were held to three hits, with Addie Sapirstein, Mia Kessinger, and Abby Litchfield each recording one. Litchfield had the lone extra-base hit with a double.
Game 2: Haverford 5, Muhlenberg 2
The second game proved to be a pitcher's duel. Kaleigh Bodak allowed just three hits, two runs (one earned), four walks, and struck out three across 4.2 innings. Clarissa Smith came on in relief to toss 2.1 scoreless frames and earn her third win of the season.
At the plate, Kamaha'o Bode led the way with two hits, two runs, a double, and an RBI. The Fords struck first as Addie Sapirstein reached third and was brought home on a Kessinger RBI single. Bodak escaped trouble in the bottom half, stranding two Mules in scoring position with a strikeout of Skyla Campisi.
Muhlenberg tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Lillie Teague. Teague struck again in the fifth with another RBI single, putting the Mules ahead 2-1. Haverford answered in the sixth when Bode doubled, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Abby Litchfield's fielder's choice to tie the game at 2-2.
Relieving Bodak in the bottom of the fifth, Smith shutdown Muhlenberg in the sixth, sending both teams into the final inning, tied 2-2.
The Fords rallied in the top of the seventh. With Sapirstein on second, Lauren Martin delivered a go-ahead RBI triple. Bode followed with an RBI single, and Kyra Van Denburgh capped the inning with an RBI double, giving Haverford a 5-2 lead.
Smith then returned to the circle in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side to secure the 5-2 win for the Fords.
Haverford will return to action with a doubleheader at Class of '95 Field against McDaniel on Saturday, April 26. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
