Mules make for rough ride

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Though Nina Voith came through with a game-high in points for the Haverford College women's basketball team, the Fords couldn't tame the 11th-ranked Mules from Muhlenberg College in a 75-53 Centennial Conference defeat Wednesday night in Memorial Hall.

Voith's 21 points led all scorers and marked the seventh time the freshman cracked the 20-point barrier while raising her season average to 17.9 points per game.

Victoria Sobocinski also reached double-digits for the Fords adding 10 points while teammate Sara Cram pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Haverford (5-11, 3-9 CC) outshot the conference-leading Mules, 43 percent to 41 percent, and out rebounded them as well finishing with a 37-36 edge on the glass.

Muhlenberg (14-2, 11-1 CC) hit for nine three-pointers, though, compared to just three for the visiting Fords. The hosts also pressured Haverford into 25 turnovers, including 11 steals by the Mules, and turned those miscues into 28 points. Twenty-four of Muhlenberg's points came on second-chance opportunities in contrast to just seven by Haverford.

Trailing from the opening basket, the Fords gritted out a first half that saw them pull within four points after a Sobocinski three-pointer cut the 'berg lead to just 18-14 with 11:31 left in the opening half. That would be as close as Haverford would get for the remainder of the game, though, as the Mules stretched out to a 36-27 halftime lead on their way to the 22-point victory.

The Muhlenberg game marked the beginning of a difficult three-game stretch for the Fords who next play Dickinson College (12-5, 7-5 CC) Saturday afternoon in Carlisle, Pa., followed by a home match-up against Gettysburg College (15-2, 10-2 CC)  Monday night in Gooding Arena. The Mules, Red Devils and Bullets stand first, fourth, and third in the current conference standings.
