Women’s Basketball Warded Off by Swarthmore, 64-38

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College Women's Basketball team (7-17, 4-15 CC) dropped a matchup with Swarthmore (12-12, 10-9 CC), 64-38, inside Tarble Pavilion on the campus of Swarthmore College Wednesday evening. 

Swarthmore started off the contest scorching hot, going 10-of-20 from the field, to lead 21-7 after the first stanza. The Garnet took advantage of early shooting woes from the Fords that saw the visitors shoot 3-of-5 from the field.

The Scarlet and Black had issues controlling the ball in the first quarter, commiting five turnovers in the 21-7 scoring stretch for Swarthmore. In the scoring run, Dana Bandurick put up 10 total points, while Emily Smith added four points for the Garnet. Ally Landau paced the Fords in scoring in the first quarter, posting five points, including the lone Scarlet and Black three-pointer of the period.

The hosts kept their foot on the pedal in the second quarter, capitalizing off of seven turnovers from Haverford, outscoring the visitors 15-8, to hold a 36-15 advantage at halftime. Alyssa Hayashi headlined the second quarter for Swarthmore, scoring five points, including one triple. Haverford saw four different scorers find nylon in the second, as Landau, Shae Mercer, Brianna Feifer, and Siena Emuobor all contributed baskets.

At the half, Bandurick led not just the Garnet but all scorers with 13 points by going 6-of-11 from the field. Landau was the main scorer for the Scarlet and Black in half number one, totaling seven points.

The hosts continued their impressive start in quarter number three, holding a 14-9 edge over the Fords to take a 50-24 advantage into the fourth quarter. This time it was Norah Wingfield who shined for Swarthmore, as the center rattled off seven of 14 points, going 3-of-3 from the field and 1-of-1 from three-point land. For the Fords, Mercer continued to chip away at the Garnet lead,by drilling the only three-pointer of the quarter for Haverford.

The fourth stanza was the most even between the two teams, as both the hosts and visitors put up 14 points each. Going 5-of-12 from the field and swiping away four steals in the last quarter, the Fords saw four points each from Landau and Audrey Jakway in the final period. Despite a strong push by Haverfor, in the end, Swarthmore was able to claim victory. 

Bandurick paced all scorers with 17 points in the home win, while Wingfield had 14 points, and Hayashi posted 13 points.

For the Fords, Landau was the lone scorer in double-figures totaling 13 points, while Jakway contributed six points and pulled down four rebounds in a noble effort.

The next matchup for Haverford will be the final matchup of the season, as the Fords had down to Westminster, Md. to challenge the Green Terror of McDaniel on Saturday, February 17, at 1 p.m. Following the women's final battle, the Haverford College Men's basketball team will square off with the Green Terror at 3 p.m.
