Relentless Fords hang tough, but fall to Hopkins, 60-55

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team lost to Johns Hopkins University, 60-55, Thursday evening in Centennial Conference action at Gooding Arena. Haverford trailed by 19 points in the first half, but got to within six by the half and managed to stay close through the final 20 minutes.

Haverford (3-9, 1-7 CC) placed four players in double-figures, led by Dominique Meeks' 14 points. Meeks scored 12 in the second half and was 8-of-10 from foul line for the game. Calla Miller added 12 points and Victoria Sobocinski tallied three treys and finished with 11 points. Nina Voith scored 10 points and had a game-high four steals. Sara Cram's seven rebounds led the Fords for the second consecutive game.

Alex Vassila posted a double-double with a team-high 12 points and 15 rebounds for Johns Hopkins (7-6, 5-4 CC). Britni Lonesome scored nine points and Lyndsay Burton added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Things looked bleak for the Fords as Hopkins jumped out to a 25-6 lead 8 minutes, 9 seconds into the contest. Haverford responded with a 22-5 run that included three baskets by Meredith Schoyer and a pair of three's by Sobocinski. That run jolted the Scarlet and Black to within three, 33-30, with 3:16 remaining.

The Blue Jays went 5:44 without scoring until a layup by Burton with two minutes showing put them up by five. Vassila and Burton added baskets before Voith countered with a layup before the end of the half to make the score 39-32.

The Fords stayed within an arms-length early in the second half until Hopkins reeled of nine straight points for a 51-36 lead near the halfway mark. Haverford clamped down defensively and allowed just one field goal the rest of the game. In fact the Blue Jays went over six minutes without scoring a point.

Two layups by Meeks and one by Voith pulled HC within seven points as the game approached the two-minute mark. Hopkins made 7-of-9 from the foul line in the final two minutes, but a layup by Miller and two free throws by Meeks kept it a seven-point game, 57-50, with 45 seconds left. After the Blue Jays missed the front end of a 1-and-1 Sobocinski drained a three to make the score 57-53, but that is as close as HC would get.

Haverford shot a season-high 81 percent (17-for-21) from the foul line and committed a season-low 12 turnovers.

The Fords remain home this Saturday when they host Bryn Mawr College at 1 p.m. Haverford defeated the Owls, 58-33, back on Nov. 24.
