Shorewomen pull out victory over women’s basketball, 65-58, in final minute

HAVERFORD, Pa. – It was the tale of two halves Tuesday evening as the Haverford College women's basketball team lost to Washington College, 65-58, in Centennial Conference play. Haverford shot better than 48 percent from the field in the first half while the Shorewomen were just 31 percent. In the second half the team's flipped roles as Washington shot 45 percent and buried seven treys and the Fords shot just 29 percent from the floor.

Dominique Meeks and Nina Voith both posted double-doubles for Haverford (2-2, 1-1 CC). Meeks scored 19 points and snared 12 rebounds while Voith tallied 17 and 11. Sara Cram and Calla Miller added eight points apiece.

Washington (1-4, 1-1 CC) placed three players in double figures. Jane O'Donnell came off the bench to score 23 points on 7-of-9 from beyond the arc. Meghan Tait scored 19 points and went 8-for-8 from the foul line. Sally O'Donnell registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards.

The Fords built a comfortable lead in the opening half thanks to Voith who scored 11 of the first 19 points for HC. A layup by Voith with under two minutes to go put Haverford ahead by nine and Meeks ' layup with 17 second remaining made the score 33-22 heading to the break.

After trading buckets to opening the second half, the Shorewomen went on a 9-0 run to pull within four, 37-33. The Scarlet and Black pushed their lead back to 10 on a trey by Victoria Sobocinski. Miller buried a three on the next possession, but HC was held to just five points over the next four minutes.

Three's by Jane and Sally O'Donnell late in the half tied the score up at 56-all as the game approached the final minute. On the ensuing possession, Cram drove down the lane and made her layup for a two-point lead with 54 seconds showing. Jane O'Donnell hit a three from the corner eight seconds later to put Washington ahead for the first time since 27 seconds into the game.

The Shorewomen made all six free throws down the stretch and were 10-for-10 in the half. From beyond the arc Washington made 7-of-13 in the final 20 minutes. The Fords were outscored 43-25 in the second.

Haverford travels to Gettysburg College Thursday evening for a 7 p.m. tip then return home to host Penn State-Brandywine Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
