Big win in season-opener for women's basketball

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Nina Voith put up a double-double for the Haverford College women's basketball team in their 59-42 season-opening non-conference win Saturday afternoon at Tarble Pavilion in the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament.

Voith's 25 points led all scorers and her 11 rebounds tied for tops in the game with Middlebury's Stephany Surette. Teammates Liz Mayell, 12 points with seven boards, and Dominique Meeks, 10 and eight, also scored in double-figures for the Fords who won their first opening game since the 2004-05 campaign.

Mayell started the scoring with a 3-pointer to give Haverford a 3-0 lead in a game in which they'd never trail.

The Fords led by 11 approaching the midway point of the opening half but the Panthers clawed their way back to tie the score at 17-17 with 5:45 left in the half.

An 11-0 run by Haverford over the next 3:21 proved to be the turning point of the game as the Fords eventually took a 33-20 lead into the intermission as Voith finished off the half with a jumper to give the Scarlet and Black their largest lead.

Haverford stretched out to as big as a 20-point margin in the second half before settling for the 17 point win.

The Tip-Off Tournament continues Sunday afternoon as the Fords take on The College of New Jersey, 69-43 winners over the tourney hosts in Saturday's early game, at 3 p.m. after Swarthmore goes up against Middlebury in the 1 p.m. contest.
