Second half outburst by Garnet sets back women’s basketball, 63-50, in season finale

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team put together a strong first half and led by three at the break, but Swarthmore College went on a 20-5 run to start the second half and take a 63-50 Centennial Conference victory at Tarble Pavilion Saturday afternoon.

Haverford (6-18, 4-16 CC) was led by Nina Voith's game-high 23 points. Voith finished her rookie season averaging 18.1 points per game which is the third-best in a single-season for a Ford. In her final collegiate contest, Sara Cram scored a season-high 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for her third career double-double.

Ceylan Bodur finished with a game-high 25 for Swarthmore (12-13, 9-11 CC). Kathryn Stockbower posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards.

Haverford used a 5-0 run early on to take a 13-9 lead. A three by Voith followed by a Cram jumper capped off the run. The Garnet answered back with its own 5-0 run to tie the score with 12:45 on the clock.

Three seemed to be the magic number in the final 12 minutes as both teams established three-point leads more than once. The Fords got a layup from Cram to go ahead, 16-13, but Swarthmore scored the next six points to take a 19-16 advantage.

The Fords reeled off six straight points to grab the lead back. Calla Miller capped off the run as she picked up a steal and went in for a layup and was fouled on the play. She made the free throw to make the score, 21-19 with 5:12 to go. The Garnet took the lead back briefly, but Voith sank consecutive three's to go up by five. Bodur's layup with 1:11 left made the score 29-26 at halftime.

Haverford saw its lead quickly vanish as the Garnet embarked on their torrid run to open the second half. Bodur accounted for six of Swarthmore's first eight points and went on to score 18 in the half. Meanwhile the Fords turned the ball over six times in that span which led to four Garnet points.

Swarthmore shot 54 percent and led by as many as 21. The Fords finished the game on a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to the final margin of 13.

The Fords will have plenty of experience coming back as they return their top-four leading scorers, four starters and 12 players from the current roster for the 2010-11 season.
