Shorewomen pass by women’s basketball, 75-61

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Haverford College women's basketball team fell to host Washington College, 75-61, Thursday evening at the Cain Athletic Center. Both teams shot poorly in the first half, but the Shorewomen warmed up to a 74 percent clip in the final 20 minutes.

Dominique Meeks posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds for Haverford (3-3, 1-2 CC). Victoria Sobocinski knocked down a program record five three-pointers for 15 points. Nina Voith finished the night with 12 points and made three treys.

Despite a cold nights shooting, the Fords took advantage of 23 Washington (3-3, 1-1) turnovers, scoring 25 points off Shorewomen miscues.

Washington led the entire game and was up by as many as 10 with two minutes remaining in the opening half. The Fords cut the deficit to one twice and tied the score once early in the half, but the Shorewomen responded with runs of 8-2 and 7-0 to establish their lead. The Fords pulled within seven with 1:41 showing on a Liz Mayell three, but two free throws by Meghan Tait put Washington up 33-24 at the break.

Haverford got within seven early in the second on a Voith three, but the Shorewomen wasted little time giving themselves more than enough breathing room by going on an 11-2 run to go up by 16 at the 13:21 mark.

The Fords scored on three straight possessions thanks to another Voith trey and two free throws and a layup by Meeks to cut the deficit to 11, 51-40, with 11 minutes left. Haverford later pulled with nine when Calla Miller made the back-end of a two-shot foul near the eight minute mark. Washington promptly went on a 10-4 run to go back up by 16 with under four minutes to go.

All five starters scored in double-figures for the Shorewomen. Sally O'Donnell led the way with 17 points. Erin Kile recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, as did Tait who posted 14 and 11.

The Fords return home Saturday to host Bryn Mawr College at 1 p.m.
