Blue Jays best women’s basketball, 50-34, in conference opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team opened Centennial Conference play with a 50-34 loss to visiting Johns Hopkins University Tuesday evening at Gooding Arena. Both teams struggled offensively, but the Blue Jays hot shooting from three-point land made the difference.

Neither team shot better than 38 percent from the field, but the Blue Jays made 7-of-14 three's. The Fords held Hopkins (4-1, 1-0 CC) 25 points below its season average of nearly 75 points per game. Despite being shutdown offensively, the Blue Jays took advantage of 13 second chance points.

Dominique Meeks finished the night with 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and five steals for Haverford (2-2, 0-1 CC). Nina Voith tallied nine points and grabbed eight boards.

Hopkins got out to a 12-2 lead, scoring three baskets on second chance opportunities. Two of those second chance baskets were three-pointers by Chantel Mattiola and Siobhan Callanan. The Fords got within four points on jumpers by Meeks and Meaghan Ryan. Shortly after that the game went scoreless for over five minutes until a Mattiola three broke the stalemate with just under eight minutes to go.

Meeks' layup on the next possession made it a five-point game, but a layup by Callanan and a trey by Stephanie Fong put the Blue Jays back up by 10. The game went relatively quiet in the final five minutes of the first half, seeing just a total of five points. Victoria Sobocinski buried a three to make the score 20-13, but Callanan's layup near the two-minute mark gave Hopkins a nine-point lead going into halftime.

Calla Miller's layup on the first possession of the second half bunched with Meeks' layup two minutes later pulled the Fords within eight, 25-17, but Hopkins responded with a 14-0 run. Mattiola sparked the run with a pair of three's. With nine minutes remaining the Blue Jays were in front 39-17.

The Fords outscored Hopkins, 15-11, the rest of the way. Voith heated up, making a pair of jumpers and a trey.

Mattiola tallied 21 points and was 5-for-7 from the arc. Haverford held the rest of the Blue Jays in single-digits. Lyndsay Burton collected a game-high 10 boards and added seven points.

The Fords will have a six-day break before hosting Dickinson College, Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
