Late first half run by Red Devils sets back women’s basketball, 57-49

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team hung with host Dickinson College through the first 10 minutes of Wednesday evenings Centennial Conference contest, but a feverish run by the Red Devils to close the first half made the difference in their 57-49 victory over Haverford. The Fords made a run of their own to pull within six midway through the second, but could get no closer.

Nina Voith scored a team-high 16 points for Haverford (5-7, 3-5 CC). Victoria Sobocinski went for 13 points and Dominique Meeks recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The score was knotted at 12-12 when Voith made a layup with 10:14 to play in the first half, but the score did not remain close for long as Dickinson (6-6, 4-4) embarked on its run shortly after Voith's bucket. The Red Devils outscored Haverford 19-6 in the final 8:52 of the half. Dickinson scored 11 of its points on second chance opportunities and took a commanding 31-18 lead into the locker room.

The Red Devils extended their lead to 19 early in the second half, but Haverford managed to get back into the game thanks to an 8-0 run midway through the half. Sobocinski sparked the run by hitting a three-pointer and Rachel Baskin's layup with 9:08 showing made it a six-point game, 44-38.

Dickinson's lead quickly jumped back into double-digits, but a three by Voith followed by a Meeks layup made the score 53-45 with 2:29 left. Haverford missed opportunities on its next three possessions and after an Alesha Sisco bucket made it a 10-point game, the Fords turned the ball over next time down court and were forced to foul. Sisco made a pair of free throws for a 12-point lead and despite the Fords' best effort in the waning seconds the game ended an eight-point deficit.

Sisco scored a game-high 22 points for the Red Devils and was joined in double-figures by Taylor Miller (10). Sisco also collected a game-high 14 rebounds for a double-double.

Dickinson muscled out 34 points in the paint and scored 17 second chance points thanks to 14 offensive boards.

The Fords return home Thursday to host McDaniel College at 6 p.m.
