Women’s basketball’s comeback falls short against Garnet, 65-60

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team trailed by as many as 16 points, but made up ground in the second half in its 65-60 loss to Swarthmore College in Saturday's season finale at Gooding Arena.

Nina Voith led all scorers with 18 points for Haverford (10-15, 7-13 CC) while adding 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Dominique Meeks joined Voith with 12 points and 13 boards for her 10th double-double. Meeks scored 11 of her points in the second half. Victoria Sobocinski came off the bench to shoot 50 percent from the arc and finish with 12 points.

The Fords held and early three-point lead, but Swarthmore (15-10, 11-9) scored the next eight points for a 12-7 lead near the 15-minute mark. The score changed hands three times over the next three minutes with Haverford taking its last lead, 17-15, on a Rachel Baskin layup. Genny Pezzola knocked down a three-pointer on the ensuing possession and the Garnet saw their lead jump to 16 with 4:05 left thanks to a 14-0 run. A trey by Voith and a layup by Calla Miller in the final minute cut the deficit to 38-27 going into the locker rooms.

Swarthmore's lead quickly jumped back up to 16 points early in the second half, but the Fords kept hanging tough and eventually pulled within eight, 48-40, at the 14:04 mark. The Garnet did not allow HC to get any closer than seven over the next five minutes until Meeks connected on a layup, followed by two Voith free throws which made the score, 51-48.

After Swarthmore went up by eight a pair of Sobocinski treys brought Haverford within three with 6:06 left. The Fords were in position to make a move in the final minutes, still trailing by just three with 56 ticks left on Baskin's layup. Pezzola missed a three-point attempt next time down floor and with nine seconds left Voith had an open look at a trey, but the shot rimmed out and Kathryn Stockbower's 22nd rebound of the game resulted in a foul, putting her at the line where she made both to put the game away.

Stockbower scored 15 points to go along with her 22 boards. Katie Lytle also had a double-double, going for 14 points and 11 caroms. Madeline Ross finished with 14 points as well.

Prior to the game Haverford seniors Alejandra Alvarez, Liz Mayell and Meaghan Ryan were honored as part of the Senior Day festivities. Mayell scored three points and had one assist while Ryan blocked one shot. Mayell also entered the record books, playing in her 95th career game which tied her for first all time in program history. Alvarez suffered a season-ending injury in January, but was introduced with the starting lineup wearing the Scarlet and Black for the final time.
