Women’s basketball stays with Mules in 69-62 loss

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Despite losing to host Muhlenberg College, 69-62, Wednesday evening at Memorial Hall, the Haverford College women's basketball team played very consistent in all aspects of the Centennial Conference showdown. The Fords shot 42 percent from the field in each half while also connecting on 8-of-16 from the arc.

Nina Voith led all scorers with 24 points for Haverford (10-14, 7-12 CC). Cara Wyant scored 12 points off the bench, making three three-pointers and Dominique Meeks tallied 10 points.

The Mules led for all but three minutes of the first half and even built a nine-point lead, 19-10, nearly 10 minutes into the half. Haverford reeled off the next seven points over five minutes and eventually tied the score up at 21-21 on a pair of Voith free throws. A steal by Rachel Baskin on Muhlenberg's (18-5, 15-4) next time down floor resulted in a three-point lead for the Fords as Wyant sank a trey near the three-minute mark.

The Mules missed a handful of opportunities to take the lead on their next possession, but an HC turnover at 1:09 led to an Erin Laney layup and a Muhlenberg lead. Baskets by Kelly McKeon and Sheila Cook sandwiched between a Meaghan Ryan bucket in the final 39 seconds gave the Mules a 27-26 lead at halftime.

Muhlenberg's lead quickly jumped to 11 less than four minutes into the second half thanks to an 11-2 run. The Fords managed to cut the deficit to four with 12:45 left after a Voith trey and a Meeks layup on consecutive possessions. The Mules scored the next six points to go up 49-39 with less than 12 to play and saw the lead hover between eight and 13 until the final minute.

A three by Wyant followed by a Voith three-point play made the score 64-59. Haverford could not convert on its next possession and the Mules made five free throws the rest of the way.

The Mules placed four in double-figures, led by Kathleen Naddaff's 12 points. McKeon recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds while Alexandra Berlin and Alita Zabrecky both finished with 10.

The Fords were outrebounded 45-28 while Muhlenberg's bench scored 24 points to 15 for HC.

Haverford closes out the season, hosting Swarthmore College Saturday at 1 p.m. The Fords defeated their archrivals, 62-41, Jan. 19.
