Women’s basketball takes down Dips, 53-39

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team jumped out to an 11-0 start and never looked back in its 53-39 Centennial Conference victory at Franklin & Marshall College Saturday afternoon.

Nina Voith recorded a double-double, leading all players with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Victoria Sobocinski tallied nine points, all on three-pointers, while Dominique Meeks and Cara Wyant both scored eight points. Meeks pulled down 11 boards and Wyant grabbed eight.

Haverford's (5-4, 3-3 CC) hot start saw Voith, Meeks and Sobocinski all get in on the scoring. The run lasted more than nine minutes and was capped by Sobocinski's first trey of the contest. Franklin & Marshall (4-4, 3-2) did not score its first points until an Alexa Barbush layup with 8:10 remaining.

After a Diplomats three pulled the hosts within six, Voith hit a three with under seven minutes to go and then made both her free throws near the five-minute mark to put HC back up by 11. Megan Pauley connected on a jumper with less than three minutes to play, but Sobocinski buried another three on the next possession to make it a 12-point game, 19-7. Elizabeth Snyder made a layup with 1:29 left to cut Haverford's lead to 10 at the half.

The Fords had a double-digit lead for most of the second half and it was not until an 8-0 F&M run with under seven minutes left that pulled the Diplomats within five. Haverford scored on its next two possessions which included a Wyant three with 2:07 left to put HC up by 10, 43-33.

Voith and Calla Miller combined to make 6-of-6 free throws in the final minute to keep the Diplomats at bay. Voith connected on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe for the game.

Despite committing 21 turnovers, Haverford scored 21 points off 18 F&M miscues. The Diplomats shot just 21 percent from the field and 2-for-18 from the arc.

Barbush led the Diplomats with 14 points and grabbed four steals. Allison Bauer added nine points.

The Fords are off for the rest of the month and return to action Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 when they host Gettysburg College at 6 p.m.
