Women's basketball earns second win of season with victory over Knights

ST. MARY'S, Md. –The Haverford College women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season by downing Arcadia University, 67-33, in the consolation game of the Cherry Cove Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament Saturday at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The Fords (2-1) closed out the opening half on a 26-6 run that changed a 6-6 game into a blowout victory over the Knights (2-2).

Arcadia scored the opening basket of the game then pulled back from a three-point deficit to knot the score at 6-6 early in the contest.

Victoria Sobocinski's three-pointer at the 14:04 mark broke the tie to get the Fords rolling, though, and they never looked back. Nina Voith, Calla Miller, Liz Mayell and Sobocinski each scored five points apiece in the 26-6 run.

Haverford limited Arcadia to just 21 percent shooting from the floor for the contest and out rebounded the Knights by a 50-34 margin.

Turnovers, which plagued the Fords Friday night, did the same to Arcadia Saturday afternoon. Haverford notched 22 points off 17 Knights turnovers helping, in part, to a 26-16 edge in points scored in the paint by the Fords.

The Fords played strong defense down the stretch, even after getting some playing time for a number of non-starters, allowing Arcadia only three free throws over the final 8:07 of the game.

Dominique Meeks, voted onto the all-tournament team, posted her second double-double in as many days for the Fords pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Voith topped all scorers with 17 points and added seven boards while Sobocinski also reached double figures scoring 10 points in the win.

Krista Hsu and Angie Adams each scored seven points for the Knights and Jackie Law registered a team-high nine rebounds in defeat.

The Fords face a tough battle in their next game as they'll open the Centennial Conference slate with a visit from Johns Hopkins University next Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
