Chilly afternoon for Fords as women's basketball falls to Blue Jays

BALTIMORE – Haverford College's women's basketball team limited the Centennial Conference's second-place team to 13 points below its scoring average, but the Fords experienced a chilly day on the offensive end allowing host Johns Hopkins University to finish with a 55-35 victory in league action Saturday afternoon.

Trailing by 12 with four minutes remaining in the opening half, Haverford (6-8, 4-6 CC) closed on an 8-2 run to cut into the Blue Jays' lead forcing Hopkins (11-3, 8-2) to settle for a 29-23 advantage at the intermission.

The Blue Jays were able to stretch their advantage over the Fords in the early going of the second-half as the Fords' shooting woes continued. Hopkins led 47-31 at the halfway mark of the second stanza, then the game finished with neither team lighting up the scoreboard as the combatants combined for 12 points over the final 10:30 of the contest.

Haverford got the better of the Blue Jays in steals, a 13-5 advantage, and points off turnovers with a 14-8 edge going the Fords' way. Hopkins also turned the ball over more than Haverford, 23 times compared to only 15 by the visitors.

The game's final score was due in large part to a 19 percent day shooting from the floor by Haverford while the hosts hit 40 percent. Hopkins also enjoyed a 52-27 lead in rebounds.

Nina Voith scored a game-high 17 points for Haverford and Cara Wyant led the team in rebounding with six boards. Lyndsay Burton hit for the double-double in leading the Blue Jays, registering 16 points and 14 rebounds in the victory.

The final non-conference game of their slate awaits the Fords in their next outing, a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday night at Penn State-Brandywine.
