Hoops from the Heart a success once again

The Haverford College men's and women's basketball teams hosted the 10th annual Hoops from the Heart Martin Luther King youth basketball clinic Monday at Gooding Arena. The clinic raised nearly $3,000 which will be donated to the Community Action Agency of Delaware County (CAADC). The CAADC provides services to needy families in our own communities.

The Haverford College clinic, which was co-sponsored by the Haverford Township Recreation Department, attracted 100 players from across the area. Drexel University women's basketball coach Denise Dillon was the guest speaker.

In addition to Haverford, Widener University, Neumann University, Cabrini College and Springfield High School also hosted clinics Monday. Altogether nearly $10,000 and 500 pounds of canned goods were donated to the CAADC. The clinics, open to boys and girls in grades one through eight, featured more than 400 participants at the five host sites.

"We keep getting more and more interest every year from other colleges and high schools to join us and our MLK Clinics seem to be getting bigger and better every year," said Haverford women's basketball coach Bobbi Morgan. "The people at the Community Action Agency of Delaware County do so much good for so many and all of the coaches and athletes are happy to help by doing these clinics. It really is a win-win. The college athletes get to work with kids in their communities and all of the proceeds help people in need."

The annual MLK Hoops from the Heart basketball clinic was founded in 1992. Since its inception, the clinics have raised more than $50,000 for the CAADC. In addition to operating shelters and daycare facilities for individuals and families, the CAADC also provides many vital services including welfare to work programs and food and fuel assistance.
