Women’s basketball runs past McDaniel, 55-26

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team got back on the winning track in a big way with its 55-26 victory over visiting McDaniel College Thursday evening at Gooding Arena. The Fords took a large lead early in the contest while holding McDaniel to just seven first half points.

Victoria Sobocinski led all scorers with 14 points for Haverford (6-7, 4-5 CC). Nina Voith and Dominique Meeks both scored nine points. Nine different players scored for the Fords including seven from Fern Beetle-Moorcroft off the bench. Cara Wyant added five points and Rachel Baskin had four.

The victory marks just the second for Haverford over the Green Terror and the first at Gooding Arena. The Fords outscored McDaniel (2-11, 2-8 CC) 24-2 in the paint and 20-8 off turnovers.

Five points from Sobocinski to start the game gave the Fords an early lead which they did not relinquish. Just over 10 minutes into the first half the lead was pushed to 13, 15-2, thanks to a Sobocinski trey. Haverford closed the half on an 11-0 run which was capped by a Voith three-pointer to make the score 31-7 as the teams headed to the break.

In the second half, HC extended its lead to 37 just past the midway point. The Fords received 15 points from their bench in the final 20 minutes.

Rachel Rybak and Cara Thompson both led the Green Terror with five points each.

Haverford faces a tough task this Saturday, traveling to second-place Johns Hopkins University for a 1 p.m. tip-off. Hopkins downed the Fords, 50-34, in their first meeting of the season.
