Comeback by women’s basketball falls short in 59-55 OT loss to Bears

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team erased an 11-point halftime deficit to take a three-point lead late in the second half before falling in overtime to fourth place Ursinus College Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference play. The Fords shot 43 percent from the field and connected on four three-pointers in the final 20 minutes to force an extra five minutes.

Dominique Meeks and Nina Voith accounted for 35 of Haverford's (9-13, 6-11 CC) 55 points. Meeks led the Fords with 21 points while Voith went for a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Calla Miller scored eight points, handed out four assists and collected three steals.

Ursinus (14-8, 10-7) opened up a 10-point lead just over six minutes into the contest. The Fords quickly pulled within three, 17-14, on a Voith jumper at the 11:15 mark, but HC went cold over the next six minutes which allowed the Bears to go back up by 10. Ursinus extended its lead to 13 on a Sarah Martin jumper with less than a minute to go, but Meeks buried a jumper on the next possession to make the score 32-21 at the half.

The Bears kept their 11-point lead for over seven minutes to start the second half until a Voith trey sparked an 8-0 Haverford run. The run spanned over four minutes and tied the score at 40-40 with 8:42 remaining. Ursinus scored baskets on its next two possessions to go up by four, but the Fords countered on their next two possessions. Two free throws by Meeks and another Voith three-ball gave Haverford its first lead since early in the first half.

Meeks extended HC's lead to 47-44 with just under five minutes to go, but Ursinus slowly crept back and the final four minutes were neck-and-neck. The Bears never lead the rest of regulation, but tied the score three times. Haverford led by two, 50-48, with 1:44 left, but could not add to its lead. A steal by Martin and a Haverford foul with 32 ticks remaining put Lindsay Teuber at the line where she sank two free throws, sending the game to overtime.

Voith scored the first bucket of the extra frame and Haverford led with less three minutes left, but the Bears scored seven of the final nine points. A jumper and a free throw by Martin put Ursinus up by two, but Cara Wyant tied the score at 55-all on a jumper with 1:21 to play. The Bears made four free throws in the final 47 seconds to push their lead to the final margin of four.

Teuber led all players with 26 points and 14 rebounds for Ursinus. Martin added 13 points. The Bears owned a 41-29 advantage on the glass and had five different players grab at least four rebounds.

Haverford will be off until Monday, making the short trip to Bryn Mawr College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
