Late run by women’s basketball not enough in 65-48 loss to Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team cut a 19-point second half deficit to five with four minutes remaining, but could not get any closer in a 65-48 loss to host Ursinus College in Centennial Conference action at Helfferich Hall Wednesday evening.

Nina Voith led Haverford (4-4, 2-3 CC) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Dominique Meeks scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Both Voith and Meeks had big second half's, going for 14 and 10 points, respectively. Rachel Baskin dished out four assists while Victoria Sobocinski grabbed three steals to lead the Fords.

After trailing by seven early, Haverford pulled within three– 13-10 – after a pair of layups by Meeks on consecutive possessions near the 12-minute mark. The Bears jumped back up by seven briefly, but a baseline three-pointer by Hope Rainey followed by a Meeks layup made the score 17-15 with 9:19 to play. That was as close as the Fords would get as Ursinus (6-2, 4-1) scored the next six points and took a nine-point lead into the break. The Bears used 11 offensive rebounds to score nine points and held a 30-18 advantage on the glass in the opening 20 minutes.

The Fords got within six points two minutes into the second half when Liz Mayell made a pair of free throws. Over the next four minutes the Bears went on a 15-2 run to take a commanding 46-27 lead. Diamond Lewis made a pair of layups to spark the Bears' run. Sobocinski ended the UC run by hitting a jumper that put the Fords on an 8-2 run. Voith hit a three at the 8:15 mark to make the score 50-40.

Haverford was not done yet thanks to the dominant inside play of Meeks. The forward scored six of Haverford's next eight points, hitting a pair of jumpers and a layup to make it a five-point game, 53-48, as the game approached the four-minute mark.

Meeks' layup with 4:11 was Haverford's last bucket of the game as the Bears finished on a 12-0 run.

The Bears owned a 48-35 rebounding advantage for the game thanks to Lindsay Teuber's game-high 16. Jaclyn Hilf scored 15 points for Ursinus and Lewis added 12.

Haverford scored 17 points off 18 Ursinus turnovers and tallied 28 of its 48 points in the paint.

The Fords close out play for the semester by traveling to Franklin & Marshall College Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
