Late rally falls short for women's basketball in conference match-up

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Nine different players scored for Haverford College led by Elizabeth Lynch's team-high 10 points, but the host Fords weren't able to overcome a second-half double-digit deficit in falling, 55-49, to Washington College Thursday night in Centennial Conference women's basketball action at Gooding Arena.

Haverford (4-2, 1-2 CC) dropped its second game in a row after breaking out to a 4-0 record to start the season while the Shorewomen (2-2, 1-2) notched their first conference victory of the year with Thursday's win.

Trailing by 10 with a little more than three minutes to play, the Fords trimmed the lead to five on Rachel Baskin's layup with 39 seconds left on the clock. However, Washington was able to hit three of four from the foul line down the stretch to put the game away.

The Shorewomencut into Haverford's 27-22 halftime lead with a four-point play in the second-half's opening 10 seconds then grabbed the lead three minutes later on a Kelly Mitchell three-pointer. The lead changed hands three times and was tied four times over the next eight minutes until a Meghan Tait layup provided the fourth and final lead change of the night. The Shorewomen increased their advantage to 10 over the next five minutes before the Fords would stage their late rally.

Haverford broke out to a double-digit lead early in the first half, breaking a 7-7 tie with an 11-0 run which included points from five different players. Washington used a a 9-0 run to draw back within two before Calla Miller's three-pointer at the 5:37 mark ended the Shorewomen rally. The Fords stretched their advantage to eight before settling on a five-point edge at the break.

Victoria Sobocinski had a nine point, seven rebound night for the Fords while Miller finished with seven points, as did Baskin in the loss.

Washington was led by Mitchell's 14 points while Erin Fitzgerald notched a double-double pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with an 11-point night.

The Fords continue with conference action in their next outing, traveling to Bryn Mawr College for a 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 contest.
