Women's basketball off to six-win start with win over Ursinus

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College's Rachel Baskin notched 12 points and 15 rebounds in leading the women's basketball team to a 47-42 home victory over Ursinus College in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night at Gooding Arena.

Haverford is off to a six-win start in 2011 with a 6-2 overall record (2-2 in the conference), while Ursinus is 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the league this season.

The Fords held Ursinus to its lowest field goal showing of the year -- 22 percent. Haverford out-rebounded the Bears 47-30 as 40 percent shooting aided the Fords' cause.

Haverford took its first lead of the game (10-9) on a Jacquelyne Pizzuto layup at the 5:36 mark. After exchanging leads, the teams went into the break tied at 16-16. Pizzuto chipped in five points and four boards total. The Fords pestered Ursinus into 16 percent shooting from the field and held the Bears to their lowest first-half scoring output of the season. Previously, Ursinus was held to 17 first-half points in its' first game of the season against Skidmore.

With the scoreboard lighting up 35-32 halfway into the second half, the Fords had already doubled their first-half offensive production. The home squad surged out to their biggest lead 44-34 with under one minute remaining in the contest with two Dominique Meeks free throws. Meeks led the Fords with 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds. When the dust settled, the Fords held on for a 47-42 win. Ursinus was led by Lindsay Teuber with 12 points and seven pull-downs.

Also of note for Haverford was Victoria Sobocinski, who pulled down 10 boards, and put up six points on the evening.

Haverford closes out 2011 action on Saturday, Dec. 10 against visiting Franklin & Marshall College at 1 p.m. in Gooding Arena.
