Haverford turns back Arcadia on the road

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Sophomore guard Hope Rainey's 15 points helped the Haverford College women's basketball team sail past Arcadia University, 62-41, Monday night in non-conference road action to earn its sixth win in a row.

The Fords (12-3) finished off the non-conference portion of their schedule a perfect 5-0 while Arcadia (3-11) dropped its third straight. The Fords' six-game win streak ties the longest streak in program history which occurred during the 1990-91 season.

Rainey finished 7-for-10 shooting from the floor on the night while freshman guard Elizabeth Lynch recorded her third-straight double-figure scoring performance with 10 points and five assists. Haverford loomed large under the boards, winning the overall battle 49-39, as every player to see action grabbed at least two rebounds. Calla Miller, Jacquelyne Pizzuto, and Victoria Sobocinski shared team-high honors with six rebounds each. The Fords tallied a season-high 21 assists for the game on 26 baskets. Miller and sophomore Rachel Baskin each added four assists to help the cause.

Arcadia enjoyed a narrow 16-14 lead with 8:57 to go in the first half when Haverford's defense shut the door on the Knights and the offense proceeded to catch fire. The Fords went 8-for-13 from the field over the remaining nine minutes of the half to jump out to a 35-18 lead. Rainey scored nine points in that span as she went 3-for-3 from the field. Haverford shot a sizzling 46 percent from the field in the opening stanza.

In the second half, the Fords picked up right where they left off before the intermission as they steadily pushed their lead to 27, 62-35, on a basket by Hope Rainey with just under two minutes remaining in the contest.

Arcadia became the latest victim of the stingy Haverford defense as it is the fourth-straight squad to be held under 30 percent shooting from the floor by the Fords. Haverford held the Knights to just 24 percent shooting for the game and forced 16 turnovers as Arcadia recorded its lowest point production of the season. Christine Taylor led the Knights with eight points and seven rebounds.

The victory capped off a full day for the Fords as they took part in the 11th annual Hoops from the Heart youth basketball clinic Monday morning held at Gooding Arena in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Haverford looks to extend its win streak on Wednesday night as it welcomes rival Swarthmore College to Gooding Arena for Centennial action. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
