Gettysburg drops Fords in tough Centennial battle

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team found Gooding Arena to be a chilly place Saturday afternoon as it fell to Gettyburg College, 52-42, in Centennial Conference action.

The Fords (12-5, 7-5 CC) came up short in their bid of a season sweep of the Bullets and dropped their second game in a row as they struggled to 26 percent shooting on the day. Gettysburg (9-8, 7-5) extended its winning streak to five.

A battle ensued from the opening tip as the contest featured two of the top three defensive teams in the Centennial Conference. Haverford took the early 2-0 lead on a jumper by junior forward Dominique Meeks but Gettsyburg answered on a bucket by Sara Kinsley to go ahead 3-2 and never relinquished the lead the rest of the afternoon.  The determined Fords made the Bullets work for every basket and were able to cut the Bullet advantage to two, 17-15, on a Meeks free throw at the 5:10 mark but Gettsyburg responded to score eight of the last nine points of the half and headed to the locker room with a 24-16 lead.

Gettysburg tried to diminish thoughts of a Haverford rally by hitting its first three shots of the second half to extend its lead to 14 points. The Fords hung tough despite never experiencing a warm-up on the offensive end, and trimmed the lead to nine on three occasions in the final nine minutes of play.

Jacquelyne Pizzuto paced the Fords with 10 points and led the team with four assists while Meeks added seven points and a team-high six rebounds.

Gettysburg junior guard Alyssa Oursler, the reigning Centennial co-player of the week along with Haverford guard Elizabeth Lynch, took game-high scoring honors with 16 points.

The Bullets won the rebounding battle, 46-30, as Kinsey snatched 11.

The Fords face the first of three straight conference road tests Wednesday night when they tip-off with Muhlenberg College at 6 p.m.
