HAVERFORD, Pa. - Dominique Meeks reached 1,000 points for her career as the Haverford College women's basketball team topped visiting Eastern University, 56-44, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

Sixteen points away from the career milestone entering the contest, Meeks hit the magic number by nailing two free throws with 2:24 remaining in the game. The foul shots were part of a 13-3 run for the Fords (8-2) that Meeks kicked off at 7:19 with a layup to push Haverford's advantage to six, 43-37. Meeks tallied another layup on the ensuing possession and Elizabeth Lynch followed with five straight before Meeks added her name to the 1,000-point club from the charity stripe. Calla Miller capped the surge with a jumper at 1:43 that increased the Fords' lead to 14, 54-40. Jacquelyne Pizzuto provided Haverford's final points of the afternoon from the free throw line in the final minute.

The two squads played to a 10-10 tie over the first eight minutes of the contest. Victoria Sobocinski had two three-pointers to account for six of Haverford's first eight points while Megan Nowak paced Eastern (4-6) with her team's first eight points of the game. After Kaleigh Boreman's three-pointer at 10:43 provided the Eagles with a one-point advantage, 13-12, the Fords rattled off 13 consecutive points including six by Meeks and five from Nina Voith to move ahead by 12 with five minutes remaining until intermission. A layup by Miller off a strong baseline drive at 1:25 stretched the Haverford advantage to 17 before Eastern scored the last two buckets of the half to trim the Fords' lead to 13 at the break, 33-20.

Meeks, the fourth player to hit 1,000 points in the history of the program, finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists. Lynch added 12 points including two three-pointers while Voith provided a spark off the bench with seven points.

The Haverford defense did a commendable job on limiting Nowak, the national rookie of the year last season, to just two points in the second half on 1-of-7 shooting. Meeks, Shannon Smith (two blocks) and the rest of the Fords combined to frustrate Nowak as she led Eastern with 12 points -- six points below her average (18.4) -- and 11 rebounds.

Haverford tallied 13 assists on 19 field goals as Pizzuto led the way with four assists and no turnovers in 38 minutes of action.

The Fords return to action after the holiday break when they welcome McDaniel College to Gooding Arena on Jan. 8. The game against the Green Terror begins at 7 p.m.
