Johns Hopkins Ends Women's Basketball's Winning Streak

BALTIMORE – The Haverford College women's basketball team saw its season-high six game winning streak come to an end as it fell to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays 58-46 at the Goldfarb Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Johns Hopkins took its first lead (8-7) of the game after a layup by Maggie Fruehan at the 11:34 mark of the first half. The Fords went on an 11-4 run highlighted by two three-pointers to jump in front 18-11 with 6:05 to go. Haverford stretched its lead to its largest of the game at eight (23-15) with 4:25 remaining after a layup by junior Olivia Walsh. The Fords kept the Blue Jays at bay the rest of the half and went into halftime with a 28-24 lead. Haverford was lights out from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of game action, going 6-of-13 (46.2 percent). Senior Elizabeth Lynch had seven points as did Walsh, who was perfect from the field (3-of-3).

The Blue Jays scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to take a 31-30 lead with 15:29 left in the game. After Haverford jumped in front 32-31, Johns Hopkins scored eight consecutive points. A three-pointer by Lynch (39-35) interrupted another scoring barrage by the Blue Jays as they rattled off seven more points, making the score 46-35 with 9:40 to go. Over the next two minutes, the Fords pushed ahead with six straight to cut their deficit to five (46-41). After falling behind by nine, Lynch registered another three-pointer and senior Jacquelyne Pizzuto made a layup to set the score at 50-46 at the 3:21 mark. Haverford was held off the scoreboard while Johns Hopkins made six of seven free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Haverford was outscored 34-18 in the second half. The Blue Jays shot 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) during the second stanza while the Fords were only 6-of-29 (20.7 percent).

Lynch recorded her fourth career double-double with a game-high 16 points and career-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Sierra Berkel scored eight points and six rebounds while Pizzuto dished out seven assists.

Head coach Bobbi Morgan's squad drops to 12-7 on the season and 10-2 in the Centennial Conference while Johns Hopkins is now 12-8 and 9-4 in conference play. Haverford will now travel to Muhlenberg on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m.
