Dickinson Advances By Women's Basketball

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Dickinson College Red Devils beat the Haverford College women's basketball team, 53-44 at the Gooding '84 Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Samantha Wetzel had a team-high 13 points along with five blocks and four rebounds. The sophomore has averaged 3.75 blocks in the last eight games. Senior Olivia Walsh tallied 12 points while freshman Katie Cook posted 11 points in the loss.

The Fords started quickly scoring nine of the first 11 points of the game. Dickinson countered with 9-0 sprint to take an 11-9 advantage before Haverford tied the contest at 11 after one quarter of play. The Red Devils push ahead in the second stanza, leading by as many as six (19-13). The game of runs continued as Haverford scored seven consecutive points to go ahead, 20-19. A basket by Dickinson's Jonica Brown gave the Red Devils a 21-20 lead at the half.

Wetzel registered the first basket of the second half, but Dickinson recorded an 8-0 spurt to go in front, 29-22 at the 6:33 mark of the third quarter. Walsh broke the run with a basket, leading to a Red Devils timeout. Following a stoppage, the road team stretched their lead up to 13 points at 37-24 as the clock ticked under three and half minutes. 

Looking for the season sweep, the Red Devils kept the Fords at bay before a three-pointer by Katie Cook set the score at 50-41 with 3:01 left in the game. Haverford got two defensive stops, but couldn't covert on the offensive end until the final two possessions, leading to Dickinson taking the contest, 53-44.

Jackie Joyce led all scorers with 17 points for Dickinson. Helen Roberts and Mary Martin had 11 points each while Kassidy Lesher powered her way to a game-high 13 rebounds in the win.

Dickinson improved to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the Centennial Conference while Haverford fell to 8-6 this season and 3-4 in conference play. The Ursinus College Bears, sitting third in the conference standings (7-8, 6-3 CC), come to the Gooding '84 Arena on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
