Women's Basketball Sinks Washington College, 61-42

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team took down Washington College by a 61-42 score on Tuesday evening. The Fords' win gives them their second conference sweep of the season. Just like their last season sweep against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Haverford (13-6, 8-4 CC) won each of the four quarters, including a 35-22 advantage over the final 20 minutes.

After a career night on the boards this past weekend as part of a double-double, Samantha Wetzel poured in a career-high 19 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds to pace her team's win. Wetzel was one of three Haverford players that finished in double figures. Olivia Walsh just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Sierra Berkel also flirted with a double-double before finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds. Katherine Moore led the Shorewomen with 12 points off the bench.

The two sides traded baskets from the field all the way up to eight-all in what proved to be the closest Washington College would come the rest of the night. During each of those final three occasions, it was the Shorewomen that answered Haverford's field goal. However, the Fords went back up by two following a layup from Wetzel. Four straight defensive stops, and two free throws from Tori Hopkins, ran the Fords' lead to 12-8 after 10 minutes.

Haverford's 4-0 run that started at the end of the opening quarter continued all the way up to a 14-2 spurt midway through the second quarter. At the run's conclusion, Haverford held its largest lead of the half, 24-10. When Washington College got the Haverford offense stalled temporarily, the Shorewomen answered with an 8-0 run of their own that cut the deficit to four points. Haverford made it a six point game, 26-20, right before the break with a pair of free throws from Walsh.

Coming out of the locker room, Haverford began to distance itself for good in the third quarter. The Fords' three double figure scorers all took their turns from the field to start the second half. After a three-pointer from WAC's Ali Grundy got the Shorewomen on the board in the second half, the Fords got two more points from Wetzel and a pair of free throws from Darby Festa to put them up 11, 36-25. Two more free throws on its next offensive trip gave Haverford back its double digit advantage and the Fords held at least that 11 point advantage for the remainder of the Centennial Conference contest.

The Fords' largest lead in the third quarter was pushed all the way to 15 points. Washington College shrunk its deficit down to 11 points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but the Fords went on another big push with a 14-2 run that made the score 58-34 with just under four minutes remaining. The Fords matched that 23-point advantage, their largest of the night, when a free throw from Emily Krasnow made the score 61-38 with 1:29 to play. WAC finished the game by making four free throws in the remaining time for the 19-point Haverford victory.

Haverford finished the night shooting just under 50 percent for the contest. On the defensive end, the Shorewomen were held to under 27 percent on the night, including a 24 percent mark during the final 20 minutes of play. Washington College finished just 2-of-13 from distance and made just 14 trips in total to the free throw line. Haverford scored 15 points on 22 attempts from the charity stripe.

Women's basketball will head out on the road this Thursday as it battles Ursinus in a 6 p.m. tip. The Fords were 52-50 winners when these teams met inside Gooding Arena on February 20.
