Black History Month Profile: Dominique Meeks '13

Dominique Meeks joined the Haverford College women's basketball team and immediately helped usher in its rise to the top of the Centennial Conference standings. Her presence certainly put the Fords' rise in hyper speed as she was an instant impact player who started every game of her college career. Meeks went on to become the first player in program history to be named a three-time All-Centennial Conference performer.

Meeks garnered second-team accolades during her junior and senior seasons when she helped the Fords to their first Centennial Conference playoff appearances in program history. She wrapped up her Haverford career with 1,141 points and still ranks fourth on the all-time scoring list to this day. Her impact on the defensive end of the court was also felt as she still holds the school record with 229 career steals and ranks among the top four players in program history for career rebounds (755).

In addition to her exploits on the court, Meeks left her mark on the women's outdoor track & field program as one of the most talented throwers in the conference. Meeks was a two-time All-Centennial Conference performer in the shot put, including a runner-up finish at the 2011 conference championship. Meeks graduated from Haverford in 2013 with a degree in chemistry and was also honored by the athletic department as the Gregory Kannerstein '63 Award recipient. That award is presented to an individual whose combination of outstanding athletic achievement and leadership has been a significant factor in a team's competitive success and whose level of performance has brought distinction not only to the individual but also the entire athletic program.

In the summer of 2015, Meeks was recognized with the Emerging Leader Award at the Richmond Dine to Defeat ALS Dinner. That event was hosted by DC/Marlyand/Virginia Chapter's Walk to Defeat ALS where Meeks served on the committee. During the previous year, her Libby's Faith Walkers team raised nearly $20,000 during the Richmond Walk and was the most successful group donation for that event. Her team included students, staff, and alumni from Haverford College and the women's basketball team.

Meek's mother, Libby, passed away from ALS in August of 2013 after battling the disease for more than 21 years. Libby Meeks was a fixture at Haverford College women's basketball games during Dominque's career. Libby's passion for raising funds and awareness to fight ALS inspired many, but none more than Dominque. In addition to her aforementioned efforts, Meeks was instrumental in bringing the Billy Lake ALS Basketball Marathon to Haverford and was a four-year member of the Joe Schwartz '83 Run/Walk organizing committee.

In addition to her service to the community, Meeks stayed involved in athletics as a basketball and volleyball coach at her high school alma mater, Collegiate School. She also held progressive leadership roles with Dominion Energy before taking up her current position as a Software Engineer at Capital One. She is married to Ronnie Gondo, who is currently a member of the Kenya men's basketball national team.
