LANCASTER, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team (1-1) dropped the opener of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic to Elizabethtown (2-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Mayser Center on the campus of Franklin & Marshall, despite a career-best 28 points from junior Cortlyn Morris. Morris, the only Haverford scorer in double figures, added six rebounds to her ledger, but the Blue Jays used a hot first quarter to pull away from Haverford late in the contest. Morris added two blocks, while Kayla Robinson excelled off the bench to the tune of six points and seven rebounds.

The Fords fell behind 6-0 out the gates in the first quarter, and were forced to claw back into the contest with Annabelle Copeland and Ally Landau hitting early shots from the field before the Blue Jays took an 11-3 advantage with a trey and eventually pushed that lead to 18-9 with just moments left in the stanza.

Morris nailed a layup with 6:56 left in the second, trimming the Elizabethtown lead to just 23-20, and followed up that attempt with another runner that cut the lead to just one. A 6-2 Elizabethtown run created some separation between the two sides, and Cyleigh Wilson then connected from beyond the arc to give the Blue Jays an eight point lead with just over a minute remaining in the half. The lead eventually hit 10 as the Fords struggled from beyond the arc on the afternoon.

In the second half, Copeland connected to cut the lead to six early, and Robinson hit a strong layup with 3:21 to go in the third as the Elizabethtown lead was down to just five. A 7-2 spurt restored that 10 point lead with a minute to go in the penultimate quarter.

An 8-2 run that stretched the first four minutes of the fourth put Haverford right back into the thick of things, but with opportunities dwindling for the Fords, Elizabethtown was able to put the contest away behind a strong turn at the free-throw line down the stretch.

Elizabethtown had four scorers in double figures, with Veronica Christ leading the way with 17 points and nine rebounds. The Blue Jays held a 35-31 advantage on the glass, and took the victory despite 17 turnovers.

The Fords will now be right back in action tomorrow as the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic continues on Sunday in Lancaster on the campus of Franklin & Marshall. The Fords will face off with Lycoming at 1 p.m. as the Warriors lost to the host Diplomats in the second game of the day.
