Women's Basketball Celebrates Seniors Against Gettysburg

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team (14-9, 12-7 CC) was upended by visitors Gettysburg (16-6, 13-4 CC) Saturday afternoon inside Gooding '84 Arena as the Bullets prevailed by a final score of 70-53, to salvage a split in the season series between the two teams.

Before the game, Eleanor Alix, Cortlyn Morris, Kayla Robinson, and current senior student manager Sydney Cummings were honored for their contributions to the program throughout their four years on campus. Family, friends, and alumni all gathered in the stands to watch the seniors play one of the final home games of their careers. Morris recorded two blocks and six rebounds to go along with her 12 points in the contest. With her two blocks on Saturday, Morris'single-season blocks total surpassed Samantha Wetzel '18's 86 blocks during the 2017-18 season for the most in program history.

Kayla Robinson registered yet another double-double, her 18th of the season, adding 13 points to 15 rebounds in 38 minutes of game action. Robinson sits just one offensive rebound shy of Haverford's single-season record, after grabbing six on the day. The record is owned by Elida Wylie '86, who grabbed 141 offensive rebounds in the 1984-85 season.

Robinson also has 314 rebounds on the season which is just seven rebounds shy of the program record, 321, set by Koren Miller '95 in the 1994-95 season. The senior will look to become the single-season program record holder in both categories on Wednesday evening when the team takes on Swarthmore at Gooding Arena.

The first quarter ended with the visitors up by three. The contest was tightly contested early on, as expected. The Fords got a quick five points from Ally Landau, who finished the game with 17 points and five assists. Robinson was the leading scorer for Haverford after the first stanza, totaling six points in the quarter. Gettysburg gained their advantage with some efficient scoring, shooting 66.7 percent in the first. In comparison, Haverford shot just 25 percent in that opening frame.

The Bullets held Haverford scoreless in the opening three minutes of the second quarter until Abby Ryan scored a layup to make the score 18-15 in favor of the visitors. Shortly after, Ryan converted another layup to cut the lead to just one. However, Gettysburg then went on a 8-0 run to extend its lead to nine. Eventually, the Bullets went into halftime with a five-point lead as Ryan kept the Fords close, scoring six points in the quarter.

The Bullets took control of the game in the second half, getting back to their hot shooting ways after shooting only 23.5 percent in the second quarter. Gettysburg shot 9-of-15 from the field in the third quarter and shot 75 percent from the field in the fourth to pull away from the hosts.

Haverford made a late comeback effort, and cut the lead to five with just a minute left to play in the third quarter, but the Bullets were just too much down the stretch.

Morris' record-breaking block came with 1:52 left in the third quarter, swatting away a layup attempt by Gettysburg's Emily Violante. Gia Flamini was the only other scorer for the Fords, scoring five points and adding two steals in solid performance.

Haverford now returns to action on Wednesday, with another key showdown against Hood Trophy rivals Swarthmore. The contest is slated for 6 p.m. inside Gooding '84 Arena and will be followed by the Haverford men taking on the Garnet at 8 p.m.
