
HAVERFORD, Pa. - Catherine Fortin and Joelle Phuah of Haverford College women's squash each earned Liberty League awards this week, as Fortin earned Performer of the Week and Phuah collected Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced in a release on Monday afternoon.
Fortin played a big role in a two-win day for the Fords Saturday, as Haverford collected a pair of victories against No. 26 Connecticut College and No. 30 Vassar. Against the Camels in the second flight, she prevailed over Isabel Schumacher in a five-game thriller, 13-11, 11-13, 11-4, 7-11, 11-9 , to help power a 5-4 upset victory. In her second match of the day against the Brewers, Fortin swept Charlotte Tobin at flight number two, 11-7, 11-3, 11-6, to help the Fords collect a 9-0 sweep over Vassar.
Phuah had a big weekend for the Fords, competing in the top flight for victories against No. 26 Connecticut College and No. 30 Vassar. Moving up the ladder to play in the flight number one, the sophomore transfer took down Mariam Anwar of the Camels 3-1 (11-2, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6) in a four game battle, to fuel a 5-4 upset victory over Connecticut College. Against the Brewers, Phuah collected a sweep over Adriana Ordaya (11-9, 11-3, 11-2), as Haverford swept Vassar 9-0.
With the pair of victories on Saturday, Haverford concluded the 2024 portion of its schedule at 2-5, following a challenging slate that included matches against Division I powerhouses No. 3 Penn and No. 10 Drexel. The Fords will resume play in 2025 with a weekend of matches in Middletown, Conn., beginning with No. 19 Wesleyan on January 17 (4 p.m.) before facing No. 22 Denison on January 18 and a rematch with No. 26 Connecticut College on January 19.
