Women’s tennis sweeps opponents in first matches of spring

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Haverford College women's team opened its spring season with a pair of 9-0 victories Wednesday on its spring break trip. In the morning the Fords defeated Division II West Virginia Wesleyan College and in the afternoon the Fords took down Drew (N.J.) University.

Haverford (4-0) won five singles matches against West Virginia Wesleyan (7-7) in straight sets. Helen Fisun and Kate Donches quickly defeated their opponents at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively, giving the Fords the first two points. At No. 4 Katie Drooyan earned the third point for the team with her victory. The last two points were won by Katie Wettick at No. 1 and Alex Ferrara at No. 2 in close singles matches. At No. 6, Jordana Bloom won by forfeit.

Ferrara and Wettick teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles while Donches and Drooyan won, 8-2, at No. 2. Fisun and Celia Tong were awarded a victory by forfeit at No. 3.

Against Drew (0-2) the same three doubles teams were all victorious. Wettick and Ferrara, and Fisun and Tong both shutdown their opponents by 8-0 scores.

In singles, Ferrara won, 6-1; 6-0, at No. 2 for the fourth point and Fisun won, 6-0; 6-0, to clinch the match. The rest of the singles lineup won in straight sets as well including Bloom who earned her first collegiate victory.

The Fords are slated for two more matches Thursday. Haverford takes on Meredith (N.C.) College at 8 a.m. and Kings College at 4 p.m.
