Greyhounds race to lead, but Fords muzzle upset bid with singles victories

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Trailing by a point after doubles action concluded, the Haverford College women's tennis team rallied with five wins in six singles matches Thursday afternoon for a 6-3 non-conference victory over host Moravian College.

The Greyhounds (6-5) were able to get ahead of the Fords (11-2) with doubles points at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. Helen Fisun and Rachel Torg teamed up for a Haverford win at 3-doubles to keep the visitors from falling even further behind.

Once singles play began, though, the Moravian lead disappeared as the Fords stormed back with five points, all from straight set victories.

Fisun, the day's only double-winner, had the fastest win with a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 3. Kate Donches, at 5-singles,was nearly as quick as Fisun in notching another point for the Fords as she took down Moravian's Katie Zen by 6-0, 6-1, scores.

Alex Ferrara at No. 2 and Jordana Bloom at No. 6 each closed out their wins with second-set, 6-0 scores following narrow wins in opening sets.

Katie Drooyan added the final point for the Fords with a drawn-out 6-4, 7-5, win over Elizabeth Endy at 4-singles.

Haverford heads to Carlisle, Pa., for its next outing, a Saturday afternoon Centennial Conference contest against host Dickinson College.
