Women's tennis picks up three singles victories in loss to visiting Washington

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Wins from Katie Wettick, Alex Ferrara and Kate Donches weren't quite enough Wednesday evening for Haverford College's women's tennis team as the Fords fell, 6-3, to visiting Washington College in a Centennial Conference match-up played on the indoor courts of Alumni Field House.

The loss was just the third of the season for Haverford (12-3, 5-3 CC) while Washington improves to 12-1 overall and 7-1 within league play.

The Shorewomen raced out to a 3-0 lead with wins in all three doubles flights but the Fords battled back in singles play.

Wettick picked up Haverford's first point of the night winning a straight set decision over Amanda Bercovici in the first singles position. Ferrara added the second point with a 6-4, 7-6 (2), win at No. 2 singles.

Donches closed out the Haverford scoring with a win over Kat Cohen in the fifth singles flight.

Haverford's Katie Drooyan, at No. 4, bounced back from a first-set loss with a second-set win to pull even against Campbell McNicol. The pair battled point-for-point in the super-tiebreaker set which finished in McNicol's favor, 11-9.

The Fords step out of league play for their next two matches, entertaining Wilkes University at the Marshall Courts Friday afternoon, followed by a trip to New York University for a Sunday match at the Stadium Tennis Center at Mill Pond in the Bronx.
