Women's tennis earns all-academic award, five pick up individual honors

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Haverford College women's tennis team earned inclusion on the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III All-Academic Team, as announced by the organization Thursday evening. Five individuals from the Fords' team were named ITA Scholar-Athletes as well.

To be eligible for the team award a squad must possess a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better. Individual honorees must be a letter winner and have earned a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Haverford finished the year ranked 19th in the ITA Atlantic South Region after playing its way into the Centennial Conference tournament for the third consecutive season.

Scholar-athlete honors went to seniors Katie Drooyan and Katie Wettick, junior Liz Crooks, and freshmen Kate Donches and Abbey Flynn.

Wettick, a Centennial all-academic team selection, played at both the No. 1 singles and doubles positions for the Fords earning first-team all-conference singles honors and second-team all-Centennial honors in doubles action. She finished her senior season with a 13-6 mark in singles play and a 13-5 doubles record.

Drooyan was also named to the conference all-academic squad following a season in which she played primarily in the No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles slots for the Fords.

Donches accumulated a 13-4 singles record in her first season at Haverford and teamed with Drooyan for a 15-5 mark in doubles play.

Flynn saw court time in singles action for the Fords last spring, and Crooks was one of the team's co-captains, as was Wettick.
