Women's tennis competes at Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team registered several strong individual performances on the opening day of the Swarthmore Invitational hosted by Swarthmore College Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Alyssa Lavin and freshman Robyn Himelstein both went 2-0 during the round-robin singles portion of the competition. Lavin took down Swarthmore's Epiphany English in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) in the opening session of the day and repeated the feat with another straight-set victory over Nathalie Tran of Stevens Institute of Technology (6-4, 6-1) in round two.

Himelstein was impressive in her first day of collegiate competition with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Swartmore's Jackie Lane followed by a tough three-set victory over Stevens' Danielle Stewart (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).

Senior Celia Tong, junior Alex Ferrara and sophomore Caitlin Gallagher each went 1-1 in singles play.

The Fords continued their strong play in the doubles segment of the event as all four pairings went 1-1 on the day. After falling in their opening match, Lavin and Abigail Healy rolled past Steven's Lexie Handel and Stephanie Chia, 8-3, to advance to the finals of the Flight B consolation bracket on Sunday.

Singles and doubles action continues Sunday afternoon at Swarthmore.
