Fords compete at ITA Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Several members of the Haverford College women's tennis team competed Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championship hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Sophomore Caitlin Gallagher, playing in the singles championship draw, went 2-0 to advance to the round of 16. In her opening match, Gallagher rolled by Elaina Sceusa of Catholic University (6-1, 6-1). Gallagher then shook off a one-set deficit to Kerry Cotter of Washington and Lee University and rallied to claim the 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Also performing well in singles action was sophomore Kristen Andersen. Playing in the Blue 4 singles bracket, Andersen opened the day by blanking Meghan O'Keeffe of Bridgewater College (6-0, 6-0). Andersen then repeated the feat later in the day by taking down Haley Goodes of Roanoke College by the identical 6-0, 6-0 score to move on to Sunday's semifinals.

Junior Alex Ferrara and senior Celia Tong will compete Sunday in consolation play of the singles championship draw and Blue 1 singles bracket, respectively.

In doubles action, Tong and freshman Robyn Himelstein overcame Jackie Renninger and Cara Stough of Juniata College by a score of 8-4 to advance to the finals of Blue 4 doubles.

Playing in the championship doubles draw, Gallagher and Ferrara cruised by Katie Samuelson and Brooke Wilkins of Swarthmore College with an 8-0 victory before falling 8-2 to Nandita Krishnan and Sydney Lehman of Johns Hopkins University.

 The ITA Regional continues tomorrow with play beginning at 8 a.m.
