Women's tennis concludes Florida swing with 6-3 victory over Saint Mary's

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Haverford College women's tennis team capped a successful week in Florida with a 6-3 non-conference victory over Saint Mary's College of Indiana on Friday morning at the Winter Park Tennis Center.

Strong doubles play helped the Fords, ranked 16th in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, get off to a good start as the top pairing of Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara captured their third victory of the spring with a hard-fought 8-6 win. Rachal Torg and Robyn Himelstein, playing at No. 2 doubles, also had a solid day with a convincing 8-3 victory for Haverford (3-2).

Leading 2-1 going into singles action, the Fords rolled past the Belles (2-4) in straight sets at each of the top four singles flights to take the match. Ferrara, playing at No. 2, led the effort with a sparkling shutout performance (6-0, 6-0) against Kayle Sexton.

Gallagher at No.1 and Himelstein at No.3 joined Ferrara as winners in both doubles and singles on the day. Celia Tong, at No. 4, accounted for the other point from singles action.

Haverford returns to action on March 20 against visiting Wilkes University at 4 p.m. The contest against the Colonels, ranked seventh in the Atlantic South, is Haverford's final non-conference contest of the 2013 campaign as the Centennial Conference slate begins a week from today at Bryn Mawr College.
